What awaits you

Why Slovenia

Lake Bled & beyond

Bled is magnificent, but Bohinj right next door is even more beautiful, and ten times less crowded. We'll show you both.

The Vintgar Gorge & the Soča

A river of otherworldly turquoise, gorges carved into the rock, world-class kayaking and canyoning spots.

Ljubljana & the coast

A capital on a human scale, its heart free of cars, with riverside markets and terrace bars on every corner.

When to go

The right season for Slovenia

May to September: spring and early autumn are ideal (22-25°C), with minimal crowds in May-June and September. Avoid: July-August, which gets very touristy, and December-February, too cold and grey for alpine hiking.

Moderate alpine climate. Valleys: warm summers (25-28°C), cold winters (-2 to 2°C). The Adriatic coast is warmer and drier. Pack a rain jacket even in summer (mountain showers). Sunshine is all but guaranteed from May to September.

The must-sees

01

Lake Bled (island & castle)

The essential stop: a baroque church on an island, a medieval castle on the cliff, turquoise water. Nearby Bohinj is even wilder and ten times less crowded: we make a point of showing you both.

02

Vintgar Gorge & the Soča river

A spectacular gorge carved into the rock and a river of almost unreal turquoise. Kayaking, canyoning, short hikes: some of Europe's most beautiful spots, accessible and less famous than Switzerland's.

03

Ljubljana and its markets

A human-scale capital with a car-free centre, riverside markets and terraces everywhere. Austro-Hungarian architecture, Art Nouveau, youthful energy. A perfect weekend.

04

Postojna & the underground caves

A vast limestone cave system, an underground boat ride, giant stalactites. Oddly touristy yet genuinely spectacular: this is pure Balkan karst.

05

Predjama Castle (Predjamski grad)

A fortress castle built into a limestone cliff face. Rarely visited, dramatic, perfect for photos. Paired with Postojna, it makes a full day out.

06

The Adriatic coast (Piran & Portorož)

Slovenia's only stretch of coastline (46 km): medieval Piran, laid-back Portorož, clear water. A complete contrast with the Alps, deeply Mediterranean, close to Venice.

Local flavours to try

  • Jota: a stew of sauerkraut (kislo zelje), beans and potatoes, a typical rustic dish, often with bacon or sausage.
  • Štruklji: rolled dumplings with meat, cheese or apple filling, a Slovenian alpine classic
  • Blejska kremna rezina (kremšnita): a custard-and-whipped-cream slice, Bled's signature dessert: not to be missed.
  • Idrijski žlikrofi: little potato-filled dumplings, a protected speciality (PGI) from Idrija: the town's emblematic dish.
  • Fresh fish (branzino and the Adriatic catch): on the coast, simply oven-baked or grilled with local olive oil
  • Slovenian wines (Rebula/Ribolla, Malvazija, Teran): small producers in the Vipava Valley and the Karst, affordable family-run cellars, a world away from mass-market wine.

Practical tips

  • A rental car is essential to explore Bled, Bohinj, Vintgar and the Soča: roads are excellent and safe; budget for the compulsory motorway vignette (sold at petrol stations). Mountain driving is safe, but the roads are winding: allow extra time.
  • Public transport (buses, trains) is reliable and cheap if you don't rent. Ljubljana to Bled takes 1h15 by bus (≈ €5), very efficient.
  • Tap water is safe and of very good quality everywhere: no need to buy bottled water, bring a refillable bottle.
  • ATMs and cards are accepted everywhere; a few local restaurants prefer cash. No currency scams, exchange rates are fair.
  • The Slovenian Tourist Board's one-stop website is superb: interactive maps, live webcams, mountain weather conditions. Check it before heading out on a hike.
  • Michelin stars: Ljubljana has one or two starred restaurants, but real excellence hides in rural guesthouses at €15 a dish. Don't pay more than you need to eat very well.

Frequently asked questions · Slovenia

Bled vs Bohinj: which one should you choose?+

Bled is magnificent and almost obligatory, but very touristy in high season. Bohinj (25 minutes away) offers the same alpine scenery (crystal-clear water, cliffs) yet feels ten times more authentic and empty. Ideal: 1-2 nights in Bled (castle, island), then 2-3 nights in Bohinj for quiet hikes and family-run guesthouses. That's exactly what we put together for you.

Can you hike in Slovenia without a guide?+

Yes, absolutely. Trails are very well marked, detailed maps are sold locally and GPS apps are reliable. The mountain routes (Vintgar, around Bohinj) are easy and safe. For canyoning, climbing or ski touring: a guide is strongly recommended (local clubs run affordable outings). And we can arrange everything if you'd rather be accompanied.

What language do you need? Do you have to speak Slovenian?+

No. English is spoken in every hotel, restaurant and agency. Slovenian is hard for outsiders and French is only understood here and there, but younger locals are at ease in English. Either way, we give you travel guides and local contacts in your language: communication won't be an issue.

How many days do you need for a proper visit?+

5-7 days is ideal: 2-3 in Bled/Bohinj (alpine lakes + hikes), 1-2 in Ljubljana (museums, food, city life), 1-2 on the Adriatic coast (Piran) or along the Soča (adventure). Under 5 days: pick one theme. We build your trip around a clear guiding thread.

December to February: can you still hike and sightsee?+

Frozen lakes are spectacular, and Ljubljana stays fairly mild (-1 to 2°C, gentler than elsewhere). BUT: lakeside trails close and mountain snow calls for proper equipment. The coast (Piran) remains accessible and pleasant. Best winter picks: the Adriatic coast, or Ljubljana plus the caves. Not ideal for mountain hiking.

Is it safe? Incidents, pickpockets, scams?+

Slovenia is very safe, one of the safest countries in Europe (low crime). Pickpockets are almost non-existent outside Ljubljana's busy tourist centre (stay alert there). No taxi or restaurant scams. Single emergency number: 112 (rescue); police: 113.

Shall we plan this trip for you?

Slovenia is the perfect destination for anyone who wants it all: nature, culture and adventure in one compact, unspoiled space.
