Road trips: 5 mistakes that cost you dearly (in time and money)

3 February 2026·10 min read
Winding mountain road, road trip

Too many stops, driving the route the wrong way round, a packed first day as if it were a regular Saturday... The classic mistakes that wear you out, and how to avoid them without losing the fun.

A great road trip isn't a collection of ticked-off spots: it's a pace that holds up on day ten just as well as on day one. Great addresses can't save an absurd sequence of stops. Here's what we see most often in improvised or overloaded itineraries.

1. Too many different bases

Changing accommodation every day or two means packing up again and again, queuing at check-in, and days chopped up by driving. You multiply the logistical stress without necessarily seeing more.

A better way

Fewer stops, more nights in the same place: you explore the surroundings by day, without dragging your suitcases around at every sunset.

2. Underestimating real driving time

The GPS gives you a theoretical time. In the mountains, on narrow roads, with photo stops, coffee breaks, traffic or weather, reality quickly gets away from you. Stacking three "2-hour" segments into a single day often turns that day into a rally stage.

  • Add a buffer to long or scenic segments.
  • Plan breaks: they aren't "wasted time", they keep you from exhaustion behind the wheel.

3. Ignoring the geographic logic

The order of your stops matters: the direction of the roads, local weather, avoiding pointless back-and-forth. An itinerary planned in the right direction can save you hours, fuel, and a lot of nerves.

4. Treating arrival day as a full day

After a long flight or a big drive, your brain isn't in discovery mode. Scheduling something ambitious on day one is often how the first day gets wasted, and how the trip gets its first bad impression.

5. Trying to see everything because "it's on the way"

The list of must-sees on social media isn't a plan: it's a compilation of moments borrowed from strangers. Better one region truly experienced than three countries skimmed. This isn't minimalism for the aesthetic: it's respect for your energy and for what you wanted to feel in the first place.

“A strong itinerary has a clear thread running through it, with room for the unplanned moment that often becomes the best memory.”
